Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez has backed his star striker Fernando Torres' frank claims that the squad needs heavy investment in order to progress.

After finishing second in the Premier League last season, losing only two games, Liverpool have seen a dramatic decline in fortunes this campaign.

Following the draw at Birmingham City on Sunday, Liverpool are in sixth place in the league, four points behind Manchester City and the all-important Champions League qualifying position - having played a game more than both City and fellow challengers Tottenham Hotspur.
Benitez conceeded at a press conference that he agrees with Torres about "a lot of things" and that his squad need major investment this summer in order to become title challengers again.
"We need to sign some players, we need to bring in some money. We need an investor and then we can challenge in a better way." Benitez said.
"The players are working so hard and they feel they can do more."

However the Spaniard admits that without generating more funds, it will be hard for the team to progress.

"While we don't have the investor it will be difficult to go one step forward," he acknowledged

The 49 year-old remained coy, however, refusing to be drawn when pressed for further information about whether he was aware of any immenent investment.

Benitez was speaking ahead of Thursday's Europa League quarter-final second leg against Benfica, at Anfield.
His side trail 2-1 from the first meeting in Lisbon but, after securing a valuable away goal, the competition looks like their best hope of salvaging something from a poor season.
